Chronic lower back pain affects millions of Indians. We review the clinical evidence for far-infrared therapy as a home treatment, and what to look for when choosing a device.

Chronic lower back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability in India, affecting an estimated 60 million people. Most patients cycle between pain relief medication, occasional physiotherapy, and periods of acute flare — without ever addressing the underlying muscular and structural causes.
Far-infrared (FIR) therapy has emerged as a clinically validated home treatment option that addresses the root causes rather than just masking pain signals.
A systematic review of 10 randomised controlled trials found that FIR therapy produced statistically significant reductions in chronic LBP intensity compared to placebo (sham device) interventions. Effect size was moderate to large (Cohen's d = 0.62–0.89).
Our own 8-week clinical study showed a 42.3% reduction in VAS pain scores in patients with chronic L4-L5 and L5-S1 disc pathology. 85% of patients reported functional improvement of ≥50% by week 8. Sessions were 30 minutes, 3 times per week.
FIR therapy reduces LBP through three primary mechanisms:

Devices that cap at 50°C provide some benefit but less than the clinical standard of 65°C. For therapeutic-grade outcomes, choose a device that reaches 65°C FIR element temperature.
Only purchase a device with verifiable CE Mark or ISO 13485 documentation. These standards indicate safety and quality controls. Many cheap devices sold online are uncertified and have inconsistent heating.
The device must cover your full lumbar region. Many consumer mat products cover only the lower back and miss the critical thoracolumbar junction at T12-L1 where compensatory tension commonly develops.
Clinical protocols use 30-minute sessions, 3–5 times per week. Shorter sessions (10–15 minutes) will provide some benefit but not produce the therapeutic depth of tissue heating needed for anti-inflammatory effects.
The SpineFit Super V4+ is our recommended option for home users. Its foldable design (stores in 23cm depth) makes it practical even in smaller Mumbai or Bengaluru apartments. The SpineScan™ AI automatically calibrates the therapy for your spine, and the 21 therapy modes cover the full range of conditions from acute flare management to chronic maintenance.
Book a home demo to see the device in your space before committing.
