Your Annual Spine Health Checklist — 15 Things to Assess Every Year
Most people wait until they're in severe pain to think about spine health. This annual checklist helps you stay ahead of problems before they become chronic.
Why Annual Spine Assessment Matters
Spinal degeneration is insidious — it accumulates over years without symptoms, then suddenly becomes painful when a threshold is crossed. Annual self-assessment helps catch the behavioural and postural patterns driving degeneration before symptoms appear.
The 15-Point Annual Spine Health Checklist
Body and Posture
☐ Height check: Measure yourself barefoot. Loss of >1 cm per year may indicate significant disc height loss; refer to a doctor.
☐ Posture photo: Take a side-profile photo. Is your ear in line with your shoulder, hip, and ankle? Forward head position >5 cm needs attention.
☐ Weight and BMI: Calculate current BMI. Target: BMI 20–25. Abdominal circumference: men <90 cm, women <80 cm (Indian standards).
☐ Flexibility test: Reach toward your toes from standing. Fingertips past your knees without bending them is functional. Can't reach shins = poor hamstring flexibility increasing lumbar load.
Lifestyle
☐ Daily steps: Are you averaging 7,000–10,000 steps? Below 5,000 is high-risk sedentary.
☐ Sitting duration: Do you sit >8 hours/day? Have you implemented the 40-minute break rule?
☐ Mattress age: Is your mattress >8 years old or showing visible sagging? Replace it.
☐ Screen height: Is your primary work screen at eye level?
☐ Pillow check: Does your pillow maintain neutral cervical alignment? Replace if >2 years old (foam compresses).
Strength and Exercise
☐ Plank test: Can you hold a forearm plank for 60 seconds? Less than 30 seconds indicates inadequate core endurance.
☐ Single-leg balance: Stand on one foot eyes open for 30 seconds without support. Both sides. Balance asymmetry or inability indicates proprioceptive deficits that increase fall and injury risk.
☐ Exercise frequency: Achieving 150 min/week moderate-intensity exercise? This is the threshold for meaningful spine-protective benefit.
Symptoms
☐ New morning stiffness: More than 20 minutes? Schedule a doctor review.
☐ Arm or leg symptoms: Any tingling, numbness, or weakness? Don't wait — this requires medical assessment.
☐ Pain frequency trend: More pain days this year than last? Address the underlying cause now, before it becomes chronic.
