Turmeric, ginger, castor oil packs, and more — Indian homes have many traditional remedies for back pain. Here's which ones have scientific backing.

India has an extraordinarily rich tradition of home remedies for back pain. Some have been validated by modern research; others are harmless rituals; a few may occasionally cause harm. Here's the evidence-based breakdown.
Curcumin is one of the most studied anti-inflammatory compounds. Multiple RCTs show it reduces inflammatory markers (IL-6, TNF-α, CRP) comparable to low-dose NSAIDs. Key issue: bioavailability is poor — curcumin needs black pepper (piperine) or a phospholipid complex to be absorbed. Standard golden milk has limited effect; standardised curcumin supplements (500 mg twice daily with black pepper) show clinical benefit.
Contains gingerols and shogaols with proven anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. A 2015 systematic review found ginger supplements reduced muscle pain after exercise and chronic joint pain. 1–3 g/day of standardised ginger extract is the studied dose.
Mustard oil massage followed by warm cloth application is a deeply embedded Indian tradition. The heat component has strong evidence for muscle pain; mustard oil has mild counter-irritant (capsaicin-like) properties that may add modest benefit. Effective for acute muscle strain — consistent with the FIR thermal therapy principle.
Ricinoleic acid in castor oil has documented anti-inflammatory effects topically. Small studies suggest benefit for joint pain. The pack application (cloth soaked in castor oil, applied warm) may provide benefit through combined heat and ricinoleic acid action. Evidence is too limited for strong recommendation, but risk is minimal.
Boswellic acids specifically inhibit 5-LOX (an inflammatory enzyme not targeted by NSAIDs). Multiple clinical trials show significant reduction in pain and disability in osteoarthritis and disc-related back pain. 300–500 mg standardised extract three times daily. One of the most evidence-supported herbal anti-inflammatories available.
